How ads can supercharge your A/B testing
Learn what works without waiting for site conversions
Hi there,
When traffic is limited, some CRO specialists hit pause on testing. I definitely don’t.
In early-stage growth, traffic is a luxury, so I’ve learned to move experiments up the funnel. Meta ads have become one of my favorite testing tools.
Ads aren’t just for performance teams. They can help you validate copy, offers, and even funnel flows long before users reach your site.
The trick is knowing when to trust Meta’s algorithm (harder than it sounds) and when to stay in control.
In this week’s Convert article, I cover:
How to use Meta’s A/B testing feature (and when not to)
How to test ad angles, offers, and landing pages
How to avoid the UTM trap that breaks tracking
Why “statistical significance” can slow you down in ad testing
When I was Head of Growth at Heights, we used the approach explained in the article to pre-test our value proposition and jobs to be done through ads.
The result? A far higher win rate than you’d usually expect.
Practical tips
Here are a few lessons from using ads as experiments:
Find your winning message early. Same image, different headlines — let CTR show which angle deserves a real test.
Validate offers fast. Ads are the easiest way to see if “Money-back guarantee” beats “20% off.”
Test journeys, not just pages. Run the same ad to an educational page versus a quiz to see which funnel path converts better.
Use Meta’s A/B tool for control, not volume. It’s slower but cleaner, perfect for high-stakes comparisons.
Ads are a messy science, while CRO is slow science. Together, they create fast, focused learning loops.
Recommendation
In every edition of Growth Waves, I also share a related resource to check out related to the week's topic.
This week’s newsletter is sponsored by Convert, an incredible testing platform for Shopify. If you have the traffic to run A/B tests, it’s a great tool to use.
I see ads being used more commonly when you lack the traffic to test; it’s one of many techniques you can use. If you are curious about how to use approaches like:
Testing upstream metrics
Before/After analysis
User testing

Ads should be a part of your CRO roadmap, not just something performance marketers focus on.
Working together, you can learn so much more, especially for smaller brands where you don’t have the luxury of traffic.
Till next time,
Daphne
