What do Duolingo, Blinkist & Strava get right about paywalls?
Steal their smartest moves to grow your DTC startup
Hi there,
Most DTC brands think of a conversion moment, like the checkout or subscription offer, as a single page or screen.
But as Rosie Hoggmascall pointed out when I interviewed her for RevenueCat’s blog, the best-performing brands don’t treat it in isolation.
Whether it’s a paywall in an app or a pricing page on your site, your customer is really asking:
Is this worth it?
Can I trust this brand?
What happens if I change my mind?
Brands like Blinkist, Duolingo, and Strava answer those questions before someone pays—and then keep reinforcing the value after.
Rosie has worked with 20+ subscription apps, and in this interview, she shares tactics that go way beyond the usual “test annual vs. monthly” advice.
While her examples are app-focused, I kept thinking about DTC websites, too. The principles apply whether you're growing an app or building an e-commerce brand.
Key takeaways for DTC startups
A few highlights from our conversation:
Conversion rate isn’t everything. You need a quality check, like refund rate, complaint rate, or NPS, to ensure people are happy post-purchase
Your pre-purchase flow matters more than you think. Vague promises upfront = regret later (I’ve talked about this here too: “8 Dating Mistakes You’re Making in Your Post-Purchase Email Flows.”)
Transparency sells. Blinkist’s “Honest Paywall” reduced complaints by 55% and increased conversions. Why? It clearly explained the trial setup and how communication would work. (For e-comm, think: clear guarantees and subscription details.)
Aftercare is underused. Reinforcing value after someone converts improves retention. Think post-purchase emails, onboarding, and feature reminders—just because they’ve started a trial or bought your product doesn’t mean they’re sold.
Recommendation
Rosie’s newsletter, Growth Dives, is one of my favourite reads right now. Each week, she shares strategic, actionable insights on customer journeys, monetisation strategies, and more.
I often hear DTC startips say things like, “Our conversion rate is good,” but still struggle with retention, refunds, or unclear value.
If that sounds familiar, this one’s worth a read.
Until next week,
Daphne
Also, do you have a paywall, post-purchase flow, or pricing page you’re stuck on and want a second pair of eyes on? Hit reply. I love a good teardown.
